Youth Ministry Icebreakers

Youth Ministry Icebreakers

First you need to clear off the snow and then get your auger and … No, no, we’re not talking about that kind of icebreaking, but the kind needed when you have a group of teens who don’t know one another.

Here are two options for a game we’ll call “Getting to Know You.”

1. Do a “would you rather” game. Would you rather go to McDonalds or Subway? (All the McDonalds teens go to one side of the room. Subway teens go to the other.) Continue the questioning. Would you rather play sports or watch sports? Would you rather eat cherry pie or chocolate ice cream? Would you rather play video games or watch a movie? All the time teens are running to the side of the room that reflects their interests.

2. Here’s a similar game, but one that might do a little more in connecting students with similar interests. List 10 typical teen activities: football, video games, running, playing an instrument, etc. Tell them to choose one that reflects their life. They then have three minutes (or longer, depending on the size of your youth group) to gather in a huddle of other students who have that same interest. Perhaps you’ll start a friendship between two teens who play guitar or like to draw.
